Who gave the name Luka Kovac to Goran Visnjic in TV Series “ER”?

Almost everyone while watching medical drama series has wished to be a doctor (at least 10 minutes after the end of the episode). Powerful adrenaline, business and private mess, and at the end of the day - a feeling of contentment because someone's life is saved. It sounds perfect!

TV series about doctors have always been highly appreciated among the viewers. One of the first and the most popular so far is “ER”, broadcast every afternoon on RTL program. During the 15 seasons of broadcasting it earned incredible 123 nominations for the prestigious Emmy. That makes this TV series one with the most nominations in the history. “ER” may be slightly more favored by Croats, because of role Goran Visnjic had in the TV Series.
Besides his name appearing in the opening credits, it is also good to hear that our little Croatia is mentioned in America and that Goran recites Hamlet in Croatian.

Although you may think that you know everything about this popular series, here are some facts that you might have missed.

  1. Goran Visnjic himself gave the name “Luka Kovac” to his character role. The producers could not come up with the appropriate Croatian name, so that Goran decided to name his character Luka, the same as his nephew (son of Vanna and Andrija Vrdoljak), and last name Kovac, as the last name of his best friend.
  2. The character of the nurse Carol Hathaway, played by Julianna Margulies, was supposed to die in the first episode, but the scriptwriter changed his mind at the last minute and she eventually became one of the most remarkable characters of this series.
  3. With 15 seasons of broadcasting, “ER” is the third longest-running series of NBC production. Only “Law & Order” and its spin-off “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” with 20 seasons lasted longer.
  4. Before Goran Visnjic came to the TV series, George Clooney, the most desirable Hollywood actor, played the role of Doctor Doug Ross. His character was often with bowed head that made him look ashamed. The thing was actually that Clooney could not remember his lines, so that he was often writing them down on papers, medical records and other props from which he has later read them.
  5. There were a lot of love stories in “ER”, but the longest was the one between Visnjic’s character Luka Kovac and nurse Abby Lockhart, played by Maura Tierney.

Interview on the set of "Crossing lines", season three

Interviewer : A Polish cinematographer once said that acting is more about hiding than showing. Goran Visnjic : I guess that’s true. Interviewer: Your role in "Crossing lines" is a perfect example of this. Marco joined the special unit of the International Criminal Court as an expert in abductions, but kept his privacy and that will remain hidden until the end of the season. Goran Visnjic: It is interesting that you raise the topic at this moment, because today we were shooting a scene with Elizabeth (Mitchell), which has a lot to do with what we're now talking about. Heroine Elizabeth - Karine talked about Marco's sister, who has been kidnapped. She knows very well that he accepts this too personally. Just two hours before starting the filming, writers sent us some new directions for the scenes.
